In your face(book): Calling all breastfeeding moms

As noted in the description of this site, my purpose is to relay research findings in a way that is more accessible to women who are not researchers themselves. However, occasionally something comes to my attention that is not research per se, but supports what research shows is a positive health behavior.

Today that something is breastfeeding - or more specifically, a breastfeeding event sponsored by the League of Maternal Justice. As I have discussed before, breastfeeding is healthy for babies AND moms for a variety of reasons. These mothers have united to support not only the act of breastfeeding, but the right to breastfeed undisturbed in a public venue, and the right to not be censored on a social media site for showing yourself breastfeeding.

So if you are (or have been) a breastfeeding mother, you can participate in this event on October 10th at 10AM. Check out the website for more details.

About the Author

Dr. Leigh Ann Simmons is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Family Studies and Health Services Management at the University of Kentucky. She earned a Ph.D. in child and family development from the University of Georgia, a master's degree in Family Therapy from MCP-Hahnemann University in Philadelphia (now Drexel University), and a B.A. in literature/writing from the University of California at San Diego.

Dr. Simmons' research interests include examining the mental, physical, and financial well being of low-income, rural women and their families, improving rural women’s access to health care, health behaviors and decision-making during the perinatal and postpartum periods, and combining quantitative and qualitative research methodologies to shape new, integrated models of health and poverty programs and policy. She has published and presented nationally and internationally in the areas of the psychological well-being of rural women, the effects of poverty on health status for rural residents, and mental health care policy. In addition to her appointments in Family Studies and Health Services Management, Dr. Simmons holds faculty affiliations with the UK Center on Poverty Research, the UK Center for the Advancement of Women's Health, and the UK Magnetic Resonance Imaging Research Center. In 2005, Dr. Simmons was designated a health disparities scholar through the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities/National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Simmons is an active member of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, where she served as the chair of the Public Policy Committee 2006-07, the American Public Health Association, where she serves as the secretary to the mental health section, the Rural Sociological Society, and the Society for the Psychology of Women. In 2003, she served as a Congressional Fellow in the United States Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions where she worked on issues affecting low-income people, including Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, the Community Services Block Grant, the Social Services Block Grant, and the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act.
